Research funding agencies require data and metadata management plans in nearly all grant proposals and they require that funded research projects make their data persistently accessible and reusable to the research community and general public within a reasonable time frame.
Where do I start?
Become familiar with data management practices by reviewing the University of Idaho Library’s Data Management Guide and become acquainted with the UI Library supported Data Management Plan Tool (DMPTool).
Contact the Northwest Knowledge Network (NKN), a unit within the Office of Research and UI’s official research data repository. NKN assists UI researchers and partners with the acquisition, storage, curation, archival and dissemination of quality research data and metadata, supporting all stages of the full research data lifecycle.
NKN can mint digital object identifiers (DOIs) through our institutional membership in DataCite. DOIs persistently identify your data and make it globally discoverable.
NKN also maintains and cultivates active connections to relevant national and international federated research data repositories and is a member of the REDCap consortium and the Data Observatory Network for Earth (DataONE).
NKN provides a variety of data management and support tools, including private cloud storage, online-survey applications, and data discovery tools. Many of these services are freely available to University of Idaho affiliates.
